A Sand Separator or hydro cyclone is designed as a free flow filter to remove the heavy (sand) particles by centrifugal forces. Raw water is pumped into the filter through the Inlet (1).

The heavy particles (sand & waste) becomes separated from the water and adheres to the walls of the filter in the Inlet Chamber (2) and Cyclone (3). It then gravitates downwards to be collected in an underflow chamber (5), while the filtered water rises to emerge from the Outlet (4) of the filter.
